Abstract
The purpose of this research was to compare widowed elder¡®s life satisfaction among living alone, living with single adult offspring, and living with married adult offspring and to identify the factors that predict life satisfaction of them. Using fist wave panel data from Hallym Aging Panel Study, the sample consisted of 606 elderly who were aged 60 and over, and bereaved of their spouse in Seoul and Chuncheon, 2003. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, there was widowed elder¡¯s life satisfaction differences between living alone, living with unmarried adult offspring, and living with married adult offspring. Life satisfaction of widowed elders living with unmarried adult child was lower than those of living alone and living with married adult child. Secondly, to the widowed elders, education, subjective health status, amount of monthly pocket money, satisfaction as parents, satisfaction with relation of offspring, and social activity were identified as significant variables for their life satisfaction. Finally, to the widowed elder with living with single adult offspring, satisfaction as parents and satisfaction with relation of offspring were identified as significant variables for their life satisfaction. Result of this study shows that special attention should paid to widowed elders living with single adult child to improve their life satisfaction through increasing their satisfaction as parents. Indeed, social changes should be reflected on these approaches.
